The 2020 election process reflects how much the peoples of the world face common problems. Young people expressed this truth by organizing global events and protests to address fundamental climate and environmental changes. In “We Want Real Big Change,” we note that many young people see that accumulating profit and private property into fewer and fewer hands is destroying the planet, placing human life in jeopardy.

Defense of the environment is linked to defense of human life, and to the struggles over housing, food and healthcare. The strategic challenge facing the American people is whether these struggles for basic needs will develop in political unity with specific struggles for the defense of migrants, youth, and women. The fascists are maneuvering to have them develop in isolation from, and opposed to, one another.

A movement to impeach the President has arisen, and according to “Fighting for Our Lives in the 2020 Elections,” defeating Trump is necessary, but not sufficient. Uniting and mobilizing the millions of discarded workers around their demands for their basic needs is the path forward. They are the backbone of the resistance. They are being pushed into political participation by the fascist offensive itself, when it attacks the programs they need to survive and attacks the future of humanity itself. They have the power to rally all of society to the defense of democracy.

Our cover story, “Women Take on Profit-Driven Health Care” explains that working class women have been targeted by a fierce counterattack as the 2020 elections gear up. Women elevated the urgency to address the health impacts of climate change, concentration camps and family separation on the border, environmental contaminations, rising rates of suicides, addiction, and the chronic multifaceted traumas of poverty and racism. Basic human needs, security, and freedom from want must be assured. It is a key reason why demands for federally guaranteed healthcare is at the center of campaigns led by working class, especially low-income women.

Vicious repression is making immigration another focal point of the 2020 election. “Fight Against Fascism, Fight for Immigrants” reports that the global hi-tech economy makes thousands of Central Americans openly trek towards the U.S. border. Fascists use this exodus as a rallying point to gather forces. Movement leaders know the government wants their struggle confined within ethnic limits, so they are using a new bilingual documentary to expose how conditions force millions out of Central America, and how our government and corporate leaders created those conditions.

New technology is affecting the United States as well. “Advances in Economy Call for Revolutionary Change” explains how millions of workers in the U.S. are losing their jobs to labor-replacing automation. They are forced into the ranks of low-wage workers and the homeless. They represent a revolutionary social force, a new class, which needs basic necessities to be distributed according to need, not the ability to pay.

“Revolutionary Politics in the Era of Dying Capitalism” reminds us that socialist politics that are anti-communist have in the past, and can in the future, result in fascism. We understand that today’s new class is objectively communist and that the problems it faces under private property, can only be resolved by a system which distributes the abundance based on need and that is communism. Revolutionaries must clearly propagate ideas that will educate the combatants and enlighten the movement as to its objective communist character. RC

Project 2025: Scapegoating immigrants

Immigration, asylees, and the border wall are front and center in the national spotlight. With cries of an “invasion by criminals, murderers and rapists” from “sh*t hole countries,” former president Trump is using immigration as a political football to score points with his political base and as a battering ram to drive his Democratic opponents further to the right.

The meaning of the Harris housing plan

Some of the cruelest and most painful attacks on the working class are happening on the housing front. As Will Suphon of Tucson, Arizona explained, “The housing market, the job market, the price of food ... it’s all become rather insane and so many people are being thrown to the wayside. You can do everything right and still end up living in your car.”

Defeat the Newsom attack: Housing is a human right

On July 25, California governor Gavin Newsom declared war on unhoused people statewide. First, he ordered encampments removed from state land, with no regard for whether displaced people have somewhere else to go. Then on August 9, he doubled down and threatened to cut housing funding to any city or county that failed to sweep away its unhoused people.
