The rise of the Occupy movement in this country and around the world is an expression of the people’s response to broken capitalism and to the war being waged by the ruling capitalist class against our class — the 1% vs 99%.
Capitalism is coming to an end, as automation replaces the workers it once needed to exploit. Now that our labor isn’t needed we are expendable, and our demands for what we need to survive and thrive — for a peaceful, equitable, sustainable and just society — are met with attacks, police murder, hunger, homelessness, prison, and the stripping of all economic and civil rights by an increasingly fascist police state.
We can only get the future we need, which we envision as we come together, by organizing around our broad and common class interests. We have an historic mission: to build a powerful movement to replace the dying capitalist system with one that is fair, cooperative and just.
Year one of the global Occupy movement has changed the world. It is bringing into the streets a mass resistance to corporate rule. Our vision is of a world organized, politically and economically, on the principle of sharing: ‘from each according to ability, to each according to need’. We organize to gain the political power we need to make that vision real — for humanity, the planet and all of life.
Happy Anniversary, Occupy!
